Dental Implant Failure

Ensuring the Success of Dental Implants

Dental implants are known to be the best of the best when it comes to tooth replacement. While there are other options for restoration, dental implants are the closest a patient can get to the look, feel, and function of a natural tooth. When dental implant failures occur, it can be a huge disappointment and can affect a patient’s faith in dental services as a whole. Patients may also suffer from injuries such as infections, severing of nerves, and puncturing of the sinus cavities as a result of dental implant failures.

We at Elite Dental Labs take pride in providing the highest quality implants, abutments, and crowns for our clients. The products themselves will not be the cause of dental implant failure. Understanding some of the common causes of dental implant failure may also be helpful in avoiding these issues.

Technique Errors

Technique errors are a major cause of implant failure. Overheating the bone during preparation or using too much force when inserting the implants into the bone can cause numerous complications as well as implant failure. Technicians should be highly trained and should have extensive information about the specific case prior to the implant procedure to avoid technique errors.

Improper Implant Placement

Dental implants should not be placed until a three dimensional CT scan has been completed. Some dentists and dental surgeons will try to avoid this step by using only panoramic X-rays to determine implant placement. This can be dangerous and may cause implants to be placed in sinuses and nerve canals. Improper placement may also result in the placement of an implant in a position of high stress, which can cause the implant to loosen later on. Dentists and dental surgeons should be thorough when performing diagnostic tests to avoid improper placement issues.

If patients lose their teeth due to periodontal disease, the sockets contain bacteria. It is important to make sure that all bacteria are gone from the site before placing a dental implant so that the area does not become infected. When an implant site becomes infected, it can inhibit osseointegration (the process of the bone fusing with the implant) and cause implant failure.

Bone Quality Issues

If the bone of the jaw is beginning to deteriorate due to age or infection, dental implant failure will most likely occur. In many cases, it is possible to do bone or tissue grafts in order to improve the outcome of dental implant surgery. To avoid dental implant failure that is caused by poor bone quality, it is important for dentists or dental surgeons to carefully examine the bone and refer patients for bone grafting if it is necessary.
